You could write an API that generates the audio for every line of text in your game and then you simply need to import and reference that within your project. If you switch on their Neural option and you properly decorate the text with their syntax to get correct pronunciation etc you can get a pretty good result. There is a cost although you get a huge number of words for free. If you want to try a few options then maybe look at Amazon Poly. There are good systems out there that can produce realistic sounding voices but as soon as you start to express any kind of emotion (anger, happy, sad, scared) they kinda fall apart or simply don't handle it. Honestly, I think you're going to be disappointed with anything you find. Optional: Having multiple voices that also cover old people / children would be amazing, but I understand it might be too much. I think these options make the result sound way more human. Where I can change the pitch, speed, and emphasis on specific words. As I said I can't afford to spend a cent on anything, and I want something that I can keep using.
